Water Chemistry in Aquatic Husbandry

Water quality is the single most important factor in maintaining the health of aquatic animals. However, there is a lack of comprehensive information on the required water conditions to ensure optimal housing conditions and animal welfare for different species. In large research facilities, basic parameters such as pH, conductivity and temperature are constantly monitored. Whether the given water chemistry - the ionic composition of the water – is suitable for the particular species is often neglected.

In his talk, Mr. Nowak will discuss the requirements of two aquatic model organisms, Danio rerio (zebrafish) and Xenopus laevis (African clawed frog). He will describe the typical husbandry conditions in research facilities and discuss our approach to creating refined husbandry conditions.
